Small rope diameters have become indispensable in mountaineering, rescue operations and tactical applications.
One aspect that has received little attention to date is that ropes also dissipate heat. Experiments suggest that this ability decreases with diameter and that the abseil device (whether a carabiner or a specially designed device) becomes warmer.
This presentation will outline the experimental results to date on this topic and the conclusions drawn from them.
A discussion of possible consequences and recommendations for action is expressly encouraged.
