For many people, ‘paperwork’ is a dirty word. But when it comes to safety-related products, precise documentation is often crucial for trust, responsibility and, ultimately, human safety. Whether it's an installation report, commissioning check or maintenance record, documentation doesn't mean drowning in paperwork, but rather recording clearly, comprehensibly and traceably what has actually been done – and what hasn't.

This presentation addresses the question: How much documentation is needed to have confidence in a product or installation? What needs to be put in writing so that I, as an operator, planner or craftsman, can say with a clear conscience: ‘That's fine.’

We discuss the fine line between excessive bureaucracy (‘I write everything down so that no one can blame me’) and dangerous carelessness (‘A sticker on it is enough’). We also highlight other factors — besides documentation — that are crucial for trust.
